Patch Test Policy

Purpose of Patch Testing
1
Patch testing is carried out to help reduce the risk of allergic reactions to hair colouring products. Allergic reactions can occur even if a client has previously used the same or similar products without issue. Reactions can be serious and unpredictable; therefore, patch testing forms part of our health and safety procedures.
This policy is based on UK industry best practice, manufacturer guidelines, and general duty of care under:
- The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- The Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013
- Public liability and professional indemnity insurance requirements
- Patch testing does not guarantee that an allergic reaction will not occur.
Who Requires a Patch Test
2
A patch test is required for:
- All new colour clients
- Clients who have not had colour services within the last 6 months
- Clients changing to a new brand, shade, or colour product type
- Clients with a history of sensitivity or allergic reactions
Clients who have had:
- COVID-19 illness or vaccination (as sensitivities may change)
- Recent surgery or medical treatment
- Pregnancy or significant hormonal changes
- Clients where there has been a significant change in medical history
We reserve the right to require a patch test at any time.
Timing of Patch Tests
3
8
Patch tests must be completed at least 48 hours before a colour service unless manufacturer guidance states otherwise.
Some brands recommend up to 72 hours, which will be followed where applicable.
Same-day colour appointments may be refused if patch testing has not been completed in accordance with this policy.

Policy Review
A trained professional will:
- Carry out a consultation and record medical history and previous colour experience.
- Apply a small amount of mixed colour product to a discreet area of skin (usually behind the ear or inside the elbow).
- Provide verbal and written aftercare instructions.
- Record the product, shade, date, and staff member performing the test.
Clients must:
- Keep the test area dry and undisturbed
- Avoid touching or washing the area
- Monitor for any reactions
Clients must contact the salon and seek medical advice immediately if they experience:
- Itching, redness, swelling, blistering, or burning
- Rash, hives, or irritation
- Dizziness or breathing difficulty (seek urgent medical help)
If any reaction occurs, the colour service will not be performed.
We maintain detailed consultation records including:
- Patch test date and results
- Product used
- Medical disclosures
- Client consent and acknowledgement of risk
- Clients are responsible for informing us of any changes to their health, medications, or sensitivities before each appointment.
For safety and insurance purposes, we may refuse or postpone a colour service if:
- A valid patch test has not been completed
- A reaction has occurred
- Medical history suggests increased risk
- Consultation information is incomplete or withheld
- This decision is made to protect both client and practitioner.
While we follow strict professional procedures, clients acknowledge that:
- Patch testing reduces risk but cannot guarantee absence of reaction
- Allergic responses can develop suddenly
- Full disclosure of medical history is essential for safe treatment
- By proceeding with colour services, clients confirm they have understood and accepted this policy.
This policy is reviewed regularly in line with:
- Manufacturer recommendations
- UK industry standards
- Insurance requirements
- Health & Safety legislation
